Is there any safe treatment for bone spurs in the neck?

I have alot of tension and cracking and grinding in my neck, my dr said it's bone spurs. heat and massage only temporarily help.

Answers:
I also have bone spurs in my neck. I'm under the care of a very good chiropractor who has eased and almost entirely relieved the tension and pain. Chiropractic is not quack medicine or "bone cracking". My doctor takes x-rays and manipulates only the vertebrae which need repositioning. Most insurances will pay for chiropractic care.

At one time I also had bone spurs in my shoulder joint. A series of cortisone shots from my regular physician relieved the grinding pain permanently.
Osteophytes or bones spurs are a normal degenerative process along the spine and along joints of other bones in the extremities. Generally you leave them alone unless, as in the spine, they begin to cause neural compression such as a nerve root or the thecal/dural sac of the spinal cord.

The Worst thing that can be done if there is neural compression from an osteophyte is manipulation. It can cause worse neural damage. A good chiro will normally respect this however you cannot see a nerve or nerve compression from a spur from x-rays.

An MRI and good neurological physical exam is the preferred/safe method.
