Bone Spurs.?
Hi,
I have Facet Syndrome as well as S.I. Syndrome in my lower back with pinched nerves and the cushion gel is deteriorating pretty bad in my lower back as well as my neck. The bone spurs I have developed on my spine in my neck are pretty bad and in my lower back.I had a Lumbar Epidural injection with no relief and my Dr does not want to do anymore because I have osteoporosis and my T-score is pretty back in my left/right hip as well as neck and lower back. My question is...is there anyone out there with similar condition to give me some insight as to what to expect next? I was given an option of pursuing with SI injections in my hips because I also have bursitis really bad in left hip, but not as bad in right hip. Steroid deteriorates the bone density more. I just don't know what to do next...I could really use some advice from someone who's been through this...what to expect? Thank you.

My mother actually had this problem and she is all but hopping around now. Want to hear the fountain of youth? Its not as exciting as it could be but its surgery. Surgery (such as a laminectomy) relieves the pain and neurological symptoms by removing the bone spurs and thickened ligaments causing painful nerve compression. The majority of patients who undergo surgery for bone spurs experience good results, often gaining years of relief and improved quality of life, my mother included. Studies have shown that age is not a major factor in determining whether a person will benefit from spine surgery for bone spurs. Medical conditions often associated with age, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease can influence surgical risks and slow the recovery processes, but its not too much to worry about.
Spine surgery for bone spurs becomes necessary if nerve or spinal cord compression is either causing unremitting pain or motor loss is documented on examination but it can also be voluntary if you do not want to sink into that kind of painful state. Discuss the risks and benefits of the various approaches to spine surgery with your surgical consultant and just see what he has to say. I'm not sure if you have done this already but if not just explore this other option that has given relief to many people my mom included. I know (second-hand) how bad this is and i hope all goes well. Take care of yourself.
