Why does osteoporosis became a problem of women?

Answers:
Because our hormone levels affect the calcium deposits in our bones. Menopause lowers estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels and allows calcium to "leak" out of our bones, making them more brittle. Pregnancy can also affect your calciuim levels(the baby takes all the minerals and vitamins it needs), hence the reason for pre-natal vitamins for some women throughout their pregnancy. When calcium levels are lower, our bones become more "porous" and "brittle"-breaking much more easily.

lack of calcium
Women lose a lot more calcium in their bones because of menstuation and pregnancy. We tend not to talk enough calcium or in the right combinations of other vitamins and minerals. Add smoking or drinking, and that depletes bone density as well.
Osteoporosis is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as either a bone mineral density 2.5 standard deviations below peak bone mass (20-year-old person standard) as measured by DEXA or any fragility fracture. While treatment modalities are becoming available, prevention is still the most important way to reduce fracture. Due to its hormonal component, more women, particularly after menopause, suffer from osteoporosis than men.
Why do women get osteoporosis? Mainly because they lose estrogen when they go through menopause. Estrogen helps with the ability to lay down new bone, or keep bone density. Most women do not get enough calcium in their diet, nor do they do weight bearing exercises to keep up their bone densities.
It becomes a problem because we end up suffering from fractures. Especially those of the hip. It is almost a 50% mortality rate one year from the point of a hip fracture.
