How can you tell if you have Osteoporosis?

What are some of the warning sings and symptoms & How can you prevent it? I'm 15 and I have low estrogen levels which makes you at higher risk of getting Osteoporosis, and lately my knees have been feeling achey and weak. How can I prevent from getting it?

Answers:
There are no warning signs.

Get plenty of calcium. Right now you are building bones.

Your knees most likely have nothing to do with it at your age.

To prevent
Don't smoke
Exercise-weight bearing
Get enough calcium and vitamin D

Osteoporosis is diagnosed by a bone density scan.
by going to a doctor and finding out.
I would be shocked at your age if you had any signs of osteoporosis. If you are concerned about your other symptoms, I would suggest you go to your doctor. I doubt if that is your problem, but you certainly could have another problem.
Well the only way to tell for sure is to have a bone density scan done. I would talk to your doctor about these concerns and see what they suggest. You can take calcium supplements to try to help prevent it. Here are some good sites about preventing osteoporosis: http://www.nof.org/prevention/

Hi Sonya,
The best way to know whether you have osteoporosis is to get tested because it is a silent disease. It doesn´t normally feel like anything. What you need is a bone densitometry, which doesn´t hurt or feel. Basically an apparattus moves above you, scanning the density of your bones.

Some bones that have been losing calcium may bother a little bit, so if you feel disconfort, it may be useful to get tested.
week bone but 4rm wut i read it says that u usually get affected after menopause so i dont think its it. but u should see a doc just 2 be on the safe side
how can you tell? You break your arm answering the phone :P Really though eat calcium rich foods which is most green leafy foods. avoid milk it does anything but do a body good, your probably fine though usually affects the elder.
The osteoporosis condition can operate silently for decades, because osteoporosis doesn't cause symptoms unless a bone gets fractured.

To prevent you have to make lifestyle changes such as exercising, quitting cigarettes, and curtailing alcohol.
first there's a simple test your doctor can give you a quickblood draw, you can ask for on at your anual check up. For self diagnosis, just consider any aches and pains that you have in your bones and any easy breakage that you may have had. visist your doc it's the best route
get your calcium while you are young.
calcium carbonate is what your body wants.
its cheap. no fancy name brands required!
don't eat milk and meat together iron and calcium block each other.
vitamins in the am juice or water with meats
calcium separate..maximizes absorption. i was told

calcium before bed is a good thing.
depending on age etc 1000-1500 mgs.

ask the experts for more detailed info.
