When you swim, there is not a lot of weight being carried by your bones. Bones become denser when you bear a significant amount of weight on them. Walking, running, weightlifting, and sports do a great job of building bone density. I do that stuff, and I have never had a broken bone in my life.
In order to help prevent osteoporosis, you need weight-bearing exercises, such as walking or running. Swimming is not weight-bearing. Your body responds to weight-bearing exercise by building stronger bones.
