What is the treatment for Steroid-induced osteoporosis (SIOP)?
Answers:
*Stop the steroid.
**Then treat with the medication Alendronate ( Bisphosphonate) or Risedronate to prevent further bone loss.
The main aim of treatment would be to maintain the minimum dose of steroids which controls the symptoms effectively. If steroids are clinically justified and osteoporosis results after long term use the aim of treatment would be to restore and maintain bone density. This is usually done with calcium tablets (often combined with vitamin D as this helps your body to absorb calcium) and/or bisphosphonates which act on the bone cells to lay down new bone at a faster rate than old bone is resorbed therefore creating a net gain in bone density. Try searching on the names alendronate (Fosamax) and risedronate (Actonel). In Australia these are listed on the PBS but your GP may need to get an authority to prescribe from the government. To self treat with calcium and vitamin d would cost about $15. Hope this helps.
