My mother was recently diagnosed with Osteoporosis. Is this life threatening?
She just turned 52 years old this month. She's been having really bad back and adominal pain for a few months now. I looked it up on Webmd.com, but it didn't say anything about it being life threatening. Just that the bones lose mass and become brital. Do you know if anyone could die from this? Other than falling and braking some bones.

Your Mother has had a bone density scan and it has revealed that her bone density is poor. Therefore they will start treatment Calcium and Vitamin D plus a bashponate one pill a week. She needs to stop smoking and get exercise. It is not life threatening unless it is left undiagnosed and untreated. Then you run into serious problems. My Cousin in law Mother has it and is now on the morphine to kill the pain. She fractured her hip and they used cement as they could not replace the joint, due to loss of bone density. She is now a wheelchair user, on tons of medication and relies on her family to get her out of bed using a hoist, take her to the bathroom, so she really has no quality of life. Now dementia has set in. Your Mother was lucky to have the Bone Denisity Scan.
Life threatening, no. The biggest risk is from fractures. However, the complications from fractures CAN be life threatening. So, prevention of falls and treatment of the osteoporosis is key.

no...used to be called "brittle bone disease"...calcium supplements will benefit her.
