I'm 27 and have osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, now I'm pregnant. Has anyone else gone through this?

I can't find any info of anyone else going through this. Can anyone help? I'm 13 weeks today. I know I got a rough road to go.

pregers, congratulatios
Don't overlook the possibility of Lupus which many times is brought on by a pregnancy. You might see a rheumatologists as he is the expert on such things more so than the obgyn.

Nope, a rheumatologists is not just for old people but an expert in the areas you have problems... and knows the dynamics of pregnancy with such things.

I'm not saying you have Lupus but that is the direction my friend went. From a neurologist that referred her to a rheumatologists.

Have the neurologist give you a 'sed rate' test. That test alone proves nothing but when she was pregnant that lab test was out of sight and gave both the neurologists and rheumatologists what direction all this was going and coming from.

BTW, there is no one test for Lupus or even a combination of tests... it is based on many things observed over a number of years... usually takes 8 years to diagnose.

There are a handful of these ‘weird’ diseases that are hard to diagnose. The one thing about them is that the patients hear the same words from their doctor, “I’ve never seen these problems together before.”

When things don’t seem to fit, i.e., not usual for your age, lifestyle, heredity, etc., it may be one of these weird diseases. And they typically don’t make your problems any better or worse, it just gives doctors a direction for your treatment.

I have sort of kept up with osteoporosis over the years and I know how the medical profession works since I have been in it for so long. They are finding major information about osteoarthritis and breakthroughs, one of which is medication that not only stops it but may reverse it. When you see stuff like this going along without much progress, then all of a sudden in five years they start having some significant breakthroughs it usually means they will have something almost as good as a cure, if not a cure. IOW, allow you to have a normal lifestyle for a normal lifespan. My guess is that osteoporosis is going to be one of these soon. On the other hand, I sort of doubt if osteoarthritis is going to see such success in the near future.

However, keep in mind that you are real young and have a long time for these breakthroughs to happen. Let me share this story with you:

I was diagnosed with a condition that made me ten times more likely to develop a certain cancer. For about three years I was depressed and even started planning for a shorter lifespan. Then one day I got an appointment with a doctor that was an expert in this field and he didn’t act like it was that big of a thing. I thought he just didn’t really understand how important my life was to me and when I hinted at it he said, “You have a much better chance of dying in a car wreck and the odds are you will die of something completely different that anything related to this problem.”

I just didn’t work out the numbers.
