It is not the sugar, caffeine or carbonation but the phosphoric acid has been shown to reduce the ability to absorb calcium, thus making bones weaker. It affects everyone differently. Women are more prone to bone density loss then men but that is not all associated with soft drinks. It is also associated with child-bearing, hormones etc.
