Osteoporosis @ the age of 18?
I Have Crohn's Diseas witch is treated with steriods alot of times...I was once on it for a year straight...Now they think I have osteoporosis.Isnt that a disease a older women would get??Any other young women have osteoporosis?
Answers:
Because Crohn's speeds up the rate at which food is sent thru the system, calcium, which takes longer to be absorbed, is not allowed the chance to reinforce bone ( an RN could tell you more here; I just have a friend with Crohn's). So it's important both to take in extra calcium AND treat your Crohn's, not just with meds but with diet.
Talk with your Doc and ask for a consult with a nutritionist. And good luck; I know it's a struggle.
I doubt very much it would be Osteoporosis at your age but there are many other diseases that might affect bone density. You really need to get it checked out by a medic tho as it sounds potentially serious.
Good luck, hope it's ok for you.
I have a friend who had Crohn's disease and was told she needed a hysderectomy. She ended up going to another doctor who told her she'd need a partial one. On a role she went to a herbalist who gave her herbs to take, cut all alcohol out of her diet, gave her diet and exercise and sleep regimine and voila, no more chrohn's. I know she gets plenty of calcium and does weight-bearing exercises and I've heard her say she's concerned with osteoprosis, but I don't know if that's why.
Good luck and talk to your primary care doctor before running off getting any wacky surgery unneccesarily.
