Every person (and animals of numerous other species) is at risk for osteoporosis. While more common in females than males (due to hormonal influence), and while more common in Caucasians than other races, osterporosis risks increase not only with certain lifestyle issues (such as smoking, inadequate nutrition, excessive drinking, anorexia, etc.), but also as a simple factor of growing older. As humans age, as a rule, their bodies become more fragile, chemical absorption through the GI tract becomes less efficient, and cells do not regenerate with the same vigor nor at the same rate as in younger people. So, everyone is at risk for this and many other conditions more commonly found in the older population. There are many suggestions which MAY reduce a person's risk, such as adequate nutrition during younger years, particularly having an adequate intake of Calcium, which can also be continued into older age. Adequate exercise, correct posture, appropriate fluid intake (water particularly), adequate sleep, use of anti-inflammatory medications (such as simple aspirin or generic tylenol or other NSAIDs), not smoking, minimal use of alcohol, avoidance of hormone replacement therapy when possible, use of daily multivitamins, etc., are all thought or have been shown to be correlated with reduced risk of osteoporosis. You are never too young to begin these interventions, and the younger you start them, the greater the benefit which may accrue.
I do belive that i am at risk for osteoporosis b/c
1. I am a women, and women are more prone to it.
2. I am white and my race is more succeptible to it.
You can prevent it by excerising and making sure you are getting adequate amounts of vitamins, such as vitamin d and calcium throughout your life. This will all strengthen your bones.
Osteoporosis is not an issue when you are 21. I am at risk because I didn't exercise when I was younger and load bearing exercise (plus calcium) builds stronger bones. As women get older and their estrogen levels drop - usually around 40 - 50 - their risk begins to go up.

Our bone is the living tissue that responds to exercise by becoming stronger.
If you exercise regularly since young, you'll produce more new bone tissues than loose them, hence your bone density increases.
We ladies achieve maximum bone density & strength (peak bone mass) around the age of 30.
Bone density gradually begins to decline as we age and become less active. For us ladies, bone loss is usually most rapid during the first few years after menopause.
The basic measures to take to prevent osteoporosis:
1.Do weight-bearing exercise (e.g skipping, jumping, walking, jogging, running and stair climbing)
This type of exercise forces you to work against gravity and involves movement usually done in a standing or upright position where gravity is having an effect.
If you do this early in life, it'll increase your peak bone mass that develops in your early adult years. Keep continue with weight-bearing exercise through your adulthood and into your senior years, it will help increase or maintain your bone mass.
2. Strength-training
It strengthens bones all over your body, especially if you exercise all the major muscle groups: your arms, legs, thighs, stomach, hips, back, shoulders, chest and butts. The force your muscles exert on your bones helps to strengthen them. The stronger your muscle is, the more force it exerts upon your bone. Therefore, by strengthening your muscles you also strengthen your bones.
3. Do stretching - It really improves your muscles' flexibility and agility. Makes you easier to move and reduce your risk of falling, when you get older.
4. Bone up on your calcium and magnesium intake
