How much calcium should I take so I don't get osteoporosis?
Answers:
You should try and get about 1000mg or 1g of calcium a day - that is the recommended daily allowance - though a little more wouldnt hurt. The truth with osteoporosis is that though the intake of calcium (and DONT forget vitamin D) can help prevent it, it is also due to your genetic information. If you make sure that you are taking enough Calcium (with Vitamin D!!) and get regular check ups, you should be good - and if you do show signs of Osteoporois, then you will find it early. There are great drugs and prescriptions that have come about in the last 10 years that make this disorder somewhat containable - but still there is no definitive cure. Good luck with your health and dont worry about it too much. Hope this helps
Recommended daily dosage is 1200 mg of calcium a day. Go buy some Caltrate 600+D Plus and take it twice a day; it has vitamin D to help absorb calcium into the system, and some other ingredients to help activate the vitamin D.
Some people say that chewables are better, because it absorbs more of the minerals than in a pill.
A 500mg a calcium pill every day should help. Drink milk or other products with a good source of calcium.
The daily minimum should be taken, but never take more than 500 mg at a time. Wait at least 4 hours before you take the next 500. Your body can only absorb this amount at a time. If you are going to take the pills, make sure they will disolve in your system. To do this, place one pill in some vinegar. If it hasn't disolved within an hour or two, it won't go into your system either.
