Don't give her fizzy drinks... The acid in them contributes to osteoporosis.

Doctors often provide calcium & vitamin D supplements. The best thing about calcium is that it also decreases the effects of PMS and is said to help maintain your weight. Anyway, milk or other dairy products simply don't provide enough calcium for a women's body. It's also harder for women's bodies to absorb calcium after the age of 19. The supplements will provide enough if taken properly and they don't have to taste awful. There are flavorful chewable tablets available. They can be tasty. Vitamin D also helps prevent bow legs. It's a condition that occurs due to lack of the vitamin and you end up having legs shaped like archery bows.
Fosamax-get the once weekly dosage form. Note: she has to be able to swallow tablets, sit upright for at least 30 minutes. It has been shown to slow down and even reverse calcium bone loss. Also, taking calcium and vitamin D will help the Fosamax. Weight-baring exercise will help as well. If she can handle it.There is a newer medicine for osteoporosis that is only taken once monthly called Boniva. That would be even more convenient.
I was just reading up on some Level I research articles at work and they concluded that Ca and Vit D actually will not effect osteoporosis. Sure it does not hurt you by any means but do not think that it is a cure. If possible think about hormone therapy from a doctor. It might be a little late for that but you never know.
If she is able to, one of the best things that she can do is to exercise, even just walking about for 30 minutes at a time. The action of muscle pulling against the bone can increase bone strength. If she is too weak or unable to do so, you can consider static exercises and the possible addition of a bisphosphonate like Fosamax or Boniva. She could also try chewing a couple of TUMS antacids every day. All of this depends upon the medications that she is currently using, if any. But you should definitely speak with her doctor first before beginning anything on your own.
Osteoperosis happens when the Osteoplasts cannot build bone. These cells are affected greatly by being Estrogen dominant which happens to most women after about age 30. The cancer clinic in Calgary Alberta has documented increased bone density with the use of a progesterone (the balancing hormone) creams. Go to healthquest.peoplesway.com and look at PRO HM. There is more information there too.
