My mum has osteoporosis and takes calcium tablets. Is there anything she can do to relieve the symptoms?
She is 45 years old and experiencing the menopause as well.
Answers:
Osteoporosis per se does not produce any symptoms, until a fracture occurs. Calcium does not treat osteoporosis, but it is important to have a good calcium intake ( which few people do) if you do suffer from the condition. Bisphosphonates are useually given to all patients with a proven diagnosis of osteoporosis, but the still need the calcium.
no cure. have her talk to her doctor. she should be on a med like Fossamax or something.
I trust she is under the care of her GP? Light exercises and a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D should also help.
Is she taking medication that the GP recommends? I only ask because the strength of the tablets will be better prescribed from her GP. A physio should be able to recommend some sensible and light exercises too. Also is she seeking guidance from her GP and maybe hormone replacement therapy from the GP?(for menopause)
Sorry to ask all these questions but naturally her Doctor can offer lots of help and treatments too.
If she is in pain then adequate pain relief is paramount too otherwise this could greatly reduce her quality of life and mobility.
There are alot of food suppliments you mother can take to relief those symptoms besides calcium tablet only and here in our country we have them in plenty.
