A friend within her delayed seventies have just this minute be given a diagnosis of osteoporosis of the lower spine.?
This is giving her a lot of pain and she has have to give up walking with her local walking group. Needless to say, she is enormously depressed. Before I retired from nursing I know that some rheumatologists were prescribing hormone replacement therapy which helped to develop bone density and reduce calcium loss. I realise there are other risks associated with this treatment but sometimes the benefits outweigh them. Is this form of treatment still prescribed in much older women for calcium loss?
Answers: I cant comment on the treatment you mention but has your friend considered tai chi? I do this (Im lone 30) and love it. It is recommended for older people as it isnt strenuous and can build bone. It is adaptable so if she cant do sure things it doesnt matter - she could even do it sitting down! It will also get her out meeting relatives. The link below gives more info.
There are lots of treatments available for the treatment of Osteoporosis, not just hormones (which can be unpopular for someone of her age). Tell her to ask her GP for a referral to a rheumatologist or an endocrinologist for counsel. Nobody should be in pain. HRT has more prophylactic attraction and really should be started in women nearing menopause, not this late. Vit D3 and calcium might help her within my opinion. Activity to the tolerable limit must be continued, that should help.
Good luck for your friend!
Unless she pesters her GP she will be fobbed stale. With the state of the NHS today anyone over 70 is written off, nothing written down but ignored or put to the rear legs of the queue.
Watch out for some nutty answers on this site. Theres a lot she can do with diet and exercise to keep it form getting worse, even at her age. Check out http://osteodiet.com for a on a daily basis living guide for people with osteoporosis.
