Osteoporosis contained by the hips?

My Dad has just been told he have osteoporosis in both his hips, one more than the other. He has be told there's nothing that can be done. He's very active and desires to continue to play sports so he is going to look into alternative medicines. Does anyone have any recommendation? Can anyone tell me how long it will take to deteriate? I am worried about him. Thanks.
