Running, arthritis and osteoporosis?

I used to run recreationally but a few years I was diagnosed with oestoarthritis within my knees and advised to stop running. I have now switched to cycling.
My mother is borderline osteoporosis and I am worried that immediately I cannot do any impact sports, that I will be a candidtae for osteoporosis later on in life (I'm 42). Is it better to do a short time running and risk the cartilage in my knees so that I can better retain some bone?
Answers: I would follow your doctor's advice and stop running altogether. To lower your risk for osteoporosis take a calcium supplement that have vitamin D to help absorption.
Once you loose the cartilage in your knees, you will be facing knees surgery and that is not an easy procedure.
Weight training with no impact can aid improve bone density as long as you do it safely.

Tex is right on the money. If the condition warrants it you can get prescription medications to get by bone loss.
Stay off the high impact sports at your age. You will get a moment ago as much benefit with other exercises of a low impact nature.
Believe me, you don't want knee replacement this untimely in life!
