What character of doctor should one see if you suspect osteoporosis?

I take care of an elderly man who is having hip and pay for pain. Should he see a rhematologist, or is there another doctor that would be more appropriate?

Answers:    Start out with a generalist or internist. They should be adept of initiating the workup and therapy on their own. If they find they need help they can refer to a rheumatologist after the initial workup is done, thus abiding some money and resources.
He should not need a specialist to get good treatment for osteoporosis. My clan MD has been ordering my bone scan and prescribing my osteoporosis meds for 2 yrs now. Save his money for the meds...they are expensive.
