If a patient has severed their spinal cord at the neck, will he/she ever feel the urge to urinate?
I know that a patient will experience incontinence, however, I don't know if despite treatment will they actually feel the urge to urinate.
Answers:
No. Severing the spinal cord at that level will render the patient unable to control bodily functions as you already know. But furthermore, the patient will not be able to feel the need to urinate (or defecate) because the nerves that respond to distension of the bladder (or bowel) no longer have a connection to the brain.
nope, they will have to get a pee bag.
no
No they will not feel anything below the break
nope.
It depends on the degree of the break - if the spinal cord is completely severed at the neck, then the person will not feel the urge to urinate. If incompletely, the degree of sensation will obviously depend on which nerve fibers are severed.
