Have you experienced side effects from spinal epidural after surgery?
I had lung surgery 5 years ago. I had a spinal epidural which allowed me to give myself controlled pain medication after the surgery. This was in for a about a week. After a few months I began having severe pain in my back originating at that spot. This happened off and on for a couple of years then stopped. Now it is happening again. The pain is severe in that spot and radiating in my back, my right lower side goes numb (incidently that's where my lung was removed) . The only relief I can get from this almost unbearable pain is to lay down immediately, put heat on it, take an aspirin and wait for it to pass which takes around 30 minutes. I am just curious if anyone else has ever experienced this. Thanks

It is possible you have developed Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. This syndrome sometimes happens after back (and other types of) surgery where there is trauma to a nerve or the spinal cord, and is sometimes caused by spinal taps or spinal anesthesia. Read this page about type 2 CRPS.

CRPS is also sometimes called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) and is considered to be a related condition or subtype of RSD.
I am assuming you have been to the Dr and you are sure your pain is not due to the original condition for which you had a lung removed. It is also possible that this is your first symptom of a cancer recurrence so if you have not seen your physician then that would be a good place to start looking for the cause of your pain.
there may not be a correlation -you state the surgery was 5 yrs ago. make an appointment with a doctor or go to an urgent care.
No, but I have heard of the potentials issues associated with epidurals. Have you recorded this with and talked to your doctor about this?
Not besides pain...But it was never long lived, past two or so days. I have had had 13 steroidal epidurals a couple nerve blocks 3 mylograms and a disco gram. I also have 4 screws and 2 rods and a cage in my L5/S1 region.. But all that has been only 2 years ago... So I haven't had the time period in between that you have had.. If you are having pain you should let your Dr. know..Especially if it's something that is returning.. It's not normal. My leg goes numb all the time and I fall and it's like I am learning to walk again. But I know it is due to nerve damage.. I would really go to the Dr. if I were you as soon as possible. If you can't get seen within a normal period of time then go to the nearest Hospital..
my husband has slipped disc and he went for a spinal epidural shot.he dont have any side effect as u described.just that the epidural shot doesnt help much.he always has a pinch kind of pain
