What is the long term prognosis for spinal fusion surgery?
Answers:
My wife had low lumbar fusion on the L5 S1 disk and it was very painful for her and it has not helped her in any way. She says if she would have known this she would have never had the operation and just lived with the pain.
My mother had this surgery called vertebraplasty to treat osteoporosis. (the one where the lady in the commercial say "I shrunk an inch) She is now pain free. If this is done early, it will help to straighten your back. (ballon vertebraplasy)
My sister-in-law had it about a year and a half ago and is just miserable. They wanted to do it for my husband and we had a neurologist say no. I wouldn't do it.
It depends on the problem and the stage of the problem. Usually people with chronic pain have the surgery and after recovery they feel just as bad, this is usually after having the problem for a long time. On the other hand if the problem just appeared the surgery might just be godsent. Anyways, it also depends on the Dr and how good the surgery is. Just make sure you find out about other less severe alternatives for the pain before deciding on surgery, because it's painful, expensinve and very risky towards the patient if it isn't done right. Anyways, g'luck.
