Does anybody know what the respiratory effects of spinal cord injuries at C7-8 are?
Answers:
The nerves that cause respiration exit the spinal cord at C-3, 4 and 5. There would be no repiratory effect from a C-7 Fracture. There is no C-8 vertabrae, as the thoracic spine begins immediatly after the C-7.
Nerve roots from the spinal chord at C7-T1 (there is no C8, it's T1) radiate through the shoulder(s) down the arm(s) to the fingers. Compensating for the cervical pain or lack of signals from the brain to the arms/fingers which cause weakness to the arms/fingers, can cause muscular soreness in the chest. That means, one can compensate for lack of strength in the arms by using their chest muscles and you may feel a tightness in your chest.
