Can a person really leak brain and/or spinal fluid?
If so, from what parts of the body can that happen, what causes it, what would happen if you were leaking brain/spinal fluid, how long would it take for something to happen, and what can be done to treat it? Also, is there anyway to prevent it or does it just happen and are there any symptoms?
I know that's a lot of questions in one but even if you only know the answer to one that would be helpful.
Serious answers only please.
Answers:
Cerebrospinal fluid is the fluid found in and around the central nervous system (CNS) organs, the brain and spinal cord. It protects the brain and spinal cord by acting like a liquid cushion. The fluid allows the organs to be buoyant protecting them from blows or other trauma. Inside the skull the cerebrospinal fluid is contained by the dura which covers the brain. Any trauma or tear in the dura can allow the fluid to leak out creating an emergency situation.

A tear in the dura may occur under the following circumstances:
Spontaneously
After surgery:
Spinal
Sinus
Brain
Head
After penetrating head trauma.
CSF leak can also be caused by a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) or by epidural placement of catheters for anesthesia or pain medications.

" The actual leak itself is not harmful, and will not cause any long term damage. The danger is that at any time if fluid can leak out then infection can potentially get in, causing meningitis.
A constant leak can cause low CSF pressure which can lead to chronic headaches. This sort of leak would probably require surgical correction, as it is not likely to close spontaneously ater this time period.

FDA Approves Sealant to Prevent Cerebrospinal Fluid Leaks After Brain Surgery
Presently, s urgeons use a variety of approaches to make sure the surgical incision site doesn't leak spinal fluid. One method is to "oversew" the area, which means surgeons sew the stitches closer together in the tissues immediately overlying the surgical site. Some surgeons pack the area with other tissues from the patient, such as fat, muscle, or connective tissue.
DuraSeal consists of synthetic absorbable sealant materials and an applicator to apply the sealant to the incision site. The sealant is composed of two solutions, a polyethylene glycol (PEG) ester solution and a trilysine amine solution. When mixed together, the solutions combine to form the sealant gel. The sealant is absorbed in approximately four to eight weeks, enough time to allow for healing.
