Has anyone had any problems with a spinal hemangioma?
I had an MRI and they found a hemangioma on my T12 vertebrae. I know already what it is and that it is benign. On the MRI, it showed that my L5-S1 disc is pretty much done and L3-4 &L4-5 are on the way out. Now I have pain there (duh right) however I also have pain up higher and I have had pain there for as long as I can remember. The ortho doc I was referred to said there was nothing wrong with that area and there for the pain must be traveling up from the blown disc at L5-S1. There isn't really that much pain in between those 2 spaces though. Also, on the high spot, any pressure there has caused pain for many years, kind of like pain you get when you push on a really bad bruising.
I am wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or know someone that has and could that hemangioma be causing some of pain. I also have a hemangioma on my right sacral ala.

I'm sorry that answerer #1 had a bad doctor but I would not be alive today without my lower back (L-5/S-1) surgery 4 years ago. I had a severe nerve pinch and on a scale of 1-10 I was suffering a 11.
My surgery was a very conservative surgery call a microdisectomy (basically just clean the sharp edges of the herniated disc that was pinching the nerve).
Is sounds like your back will have to be fused considering you have three bad disc in a row. I know two persons that had their back fused and it went well for them.
However, well does not mean back to normal. For instance, I have to take ibuprofen twice per day to keep minor pain and inflammation in check and will have to do so for the rest of my life.
The main issue with fusion is two things:
First, the recoup time is very long 6 months or so.
Second, if you continue lifting more than 10-20 lbs after your full recovery, you will do what they call stair stepping. That is, since you fused three disc together, when you lift you are bearing the weight on one disc instead of four and you blow out that disc above the fusion, thus another surgery.
I can talk all night but if you have any questions feel free to see my profile and e-mail me.
GOOD LUCK!
I don't know what a hemangioma is but I had a blown disc between L4-L5. It is a condition called spondilolothsis. (sp?) My vertebrae were on top of each other causing me great pain. I had surgery and man do I wish I could go back and find another remedy. The doc who did it crippled me and it took 3 more operations to "fix" it. But there was so much nerve damage that I still can't walk right. This was 7 years ago. I can tell you one thing. DO NOT have lower back surgery. There are other alternatives to this problem. Do some research. As much as you can. Talk to physical therapists. Anything but surgery. My life is so different now. I was a musician and actress. I haven't been on the stage for 7 years and I can't express to you the misplacement I feel in this world. I can't run, dance, jump, ride a bike. I must take pain killers just to get out of bed. And I'm a young woman! I feel so old and useless.
I suggest deep tissue massage, exercises, anything you can find other then going under the knife. Please, I know of what I speak.
Good luck and do your homework! It will save your life!
