diagnosis is via a spinal tap, or lumbar puncture. cerebrospinal fluid is obtained from your lower back and sent for analysis at the laboratory, as well as cultured to determine appropriate antibiotics to treat it.
eeek, the word "meningitis" alone scares me. Spinal meningitis is a misconception, it's basically just meningitis. One of the first symptoms is fever, severe headache, vomiting, and neck pain. When it gets to the extreme you get dark purple spots.
omg even typing this scares me. My little 8 year old cousin suddenly died because of this, and my other 5 month old cousin died because of it.
