Kindly advise me about spinal cord cancer?
My father is suffering from spinal cord cancer from last one year. he is 64 yrs old.?
but my father don’ts know about his disease. actually on 2006 my father had meningitis and doctor did lumber puncture and due to lumber puncture now he has spinal cord cancer doctor said don’t do anything otherwise he become paralyses.
my father has severe pain on his whole body but he (my father)thought that the pain is due to rheumatoid arthritis. doctor injected steroid injection in his spinal cord for pain killer.
my question is that is it fine to untreated cancer . is it ok
Answers:
The goal of treatment is to reduce or prevent nerve damage from compression of the spinal cord. The most important aspect of treatment is that it be given quickly, so any new or unexplained back pain in a patient with cancer should be taken seriously.
Corticosteroids, such as dexamethasone, reduce inflammation and swelling and may temporarily reduce symptoms.
Surgery may be needed to relieve compression on the spinal cord. Some tumors can be completely removed. In other cases, a portion of the tumor may be removed to relieve the pressure on the spinal cord.
Spinal cord tumors may develop within the spinal cord parenchyma, directly destroying tissue, or outside the cord parenchyma, often compressing the cord or nerve roots. Symptoms include progressive back pain and neurologic deficits referable to the spinal cord or spinal nerve roots. Diagnosis is by MRI. Treatment may include corticosteroids, surgical excision, and radiation therapy.(Merck)
Radiation therapy may be used in addition to -- or in some cases, instead of -- surgery.
Chemotherapy has not been developed that has proven effective against most spinal tumors, but it may be recommended in some cases.
Physical therapy and other interventions may be needed to improve muscle strength and to improve the ability to function independently when permanent neurologic losses occur.

Not all tumors are surgically treated, some undergo chemo or radio therapy please read these web sites and talk to the doctor. You and your mother have every right to know your father condition. God bless.
