MRSA infection found after spinal surgery?
My father has undergone a lumbar spinal surgery; there was an implant put on the right side of the L4-L5 vertebrae. MRSA was detected at the surgery site. The antibiotics he is on are :
1. Amoxicillin Trihydrate USP equivalent to 500mg of Amoxicillin, Clavulanate Potassium USP equivalent to 125mg of Clavulanic Acid
2. Linezolid 600mg
It seems that these are not really helping out as once its stopped the infection comes back ! Does anyone know which antibiotics give 100 % results on MRSA?
Plz note that the wound is closed. there is no discharge. CT Scans show the abscess at the surgery site.
thank you!

The problem is there isn't a whole lot that DOES work on MRSA.
(Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus). It is classified as a Multidrug resistant organism and can be difficult to control. Most strains of MSRA can be treated with Vancomycin, but that can only be given via an intravenous drip.
Of course, there are new breakthroughs all the time...
I'm not an expert, but ask the dr. about rifampin and vancomicin. I might have the spellings wrong.
One thing that may help is swabbing the inside of his nose with a Q-tip and also the wound with Bactroban ointment (mupirocin) twice a day in addition to whatever antibiotics the Dr prescribes. He probably needs to be on Vancomycin since the antibiotics you have listed aren't working. In my own experience, adding the Bactroban can be the extra edge that will often help heal stubborn staph infections - but then I never had one in my lumbar spine. Here is a link on Bactroban http://www.mupirocin.com/ My spouse and I use intranasal Bactroban when either of us is in the hospital to keep from catching MRSA which is now rampant in American hospitals. You need to use it for 2-3 weeks for best results.
Also the wound may need to be reopened and cleaned out before it will heal. I have had this happen and until the abscess is drained then the infection probably won't heal regardless of oral antibiotics. good luck - staph infection is a *****
I think it might be smart to seek the advice of an infectious disease doctor. Your father may benefit from a PICC line and a round Vancomycin...the heavy hitter of all antibiotics. Unfortunatey, MRSA is rampant in any healthcare setting. I would also ask for a round of labwork before and after each round of antibiotics. The labwork would be able to indicate whether or not the antibiotic is appropriate for the infection and whether or not it has been completely resolved. Unfortunately, once you have MRSA, you will always be a "carrier" of MRSA.
if you do not have an infectious disease dr you need to get one...they will put you on an intraveinous regeime of antibiotics that that will work for you over a course of 6 to 8 weeks. The mrsa stays in your system and you can have a reoccurence at anytime. Your fathers hardware should be removed as it is infected as well. please seek a 2nd opinion medical treatment as the mrsa is deadly
properly prescribed medications are the 3rd largest killer of people in America. MIT says that without glycosylation you don't have life. The body can and will heal itself safe and naturally. give him the right nutrients.
The surgical site may need to be incised and drained. intravenous (IV) vancomycin will be the drug of choice for the MRSA.
