My Mom is having spinal surgery.how serious is this?
I am a college student and I live hours away from my hometown. My mom just recently told me that she had been put on medical leave. My mom NEVER misses work. Her neck is in severe pain and she cannot feel her hands.
She was told that she needs to have spinal surgery with the use of cadaver bones, bone marrow and steel rods.
My mom is almost fifty, she smokes and she really isn't the healthiest person. I really worry about her. How serious is this surgery? She is trying to make it sound like it is so common for people to have spinal surgery who can't feel their hands for weeks.
This was a long time in the making, but she said it all happened when she was in the garden.

Good God.
First off, it did NOT happen in the garden.
Severe degeneration such as your mother's can only occur after decades of spinal misalignment.
On either side of the vertebra (bone in the spine) are holes (foramina) which allow nerves to pass through.
When the spine is out of alignment, these nerves can become "pinched", and whatever is on the other end of that nerve begins to die. The nerves in the cervical spine (neck) lead to -you guessed it- the arms, among other things.
After a prolonged period in such an unstable situation, the body attempts to stabilize the spine by "fusing" the vertebrae together - multiple vertebrae (and segments of the spine) function as one bone, which impedes movement and puts severe stress on the nerves and spinal cord.
For some ungodly reason, people think the cure for this is more fusion, as well as steel and other foreign bodies that are often rejected (I have heard tales of people who had tungsten rods "migrate" and push their way out of the skin!).
Your mom needs to have the normal, functional curve restored to her neck in order to have any hope at a long, healthy life.
Please tell your mom to quit smoking. Smoking constricts the blood vessels, deprives the brain of oxygen and makes the overall situation much worse.
I wish you all the best!

Spinal surgury is nothing to laugh about it is very serious
its pretty serious
if they mess up she may never
be able to walk again.
but i'm pretty sure that
doesnt happen very often.
i'll keep her and you in my
prayers.
She could EASILY die or be paralized from this sergury. Go see her and confert her before.
This is very serious, stay by her side.. Gives her love and courage as going into a surgery already need lots of courage. Hope that she be well.. Take care
Hi my friend, i know u are very worried for ur mum. My grandma gt the same problem too. She gt better after operation. Im sure ur mum will be good too.
My neighbort jsut had spinal surgery on her neck. They replaced two vertibrae and fused two others. She has to wear a neck brace for a few mopnths but otherwise she came through it just fine.
I'm a big critic of our National government, but one thing the USA has done well and I appplaud them heartily, is move medicine to the realm of real "Miracles"
P.S. Smoking is not a good thing. My neighbor is in good health. Hope yor mom is too.
Good luck!
All surgeries are serious, but you have to look at what will happen if she dont have it,if left untreated it could paralyze her.I have the same thing and Im facing surgery also,im not happy about it but i to have no choice,Just pray for her she will be ok
This is VERY serious. Your Mom may need some help in caring for herself when she comes home from the hospital. She needs to have a very frank talk with her doctor about what to expect during recovery. I am suprised that the doctor would even do this operation on a smoker! Smoking can impeed healing.
