Has anyone had lumbar spinal fusion surgery?
Please tell me your experience...pain right after surgery, how long you were in hospital, etc...
Answers:
Yes, three weeks ago.L4/5 &S1/2 with decompression.I was in hospital for 5 days as my blood pressure fell post op.I was very sore from the wound and the bone graft site from the moment I woke up.I had a morphine pump for pain but it was still very sore for the first 48 hrs post op. Sorry if that sounds negative but I am just being honest.Everyone is different though.
I was on a lot of morphine pre op so I needed more than they initially gave me.I felt quite helpless as I needed so much help but it did get better.I found that the pain gradually improved as the days went by.I felt another corner was turned after two weeks. Now three weeks on I am still sore but nothing like post op.I am still on a lot of morphine as without it life would be hell.Recovery is a slow process and I have to wear a spinal brace for 2 months but it is a great support so I don't mind.
I was very scared pre op but I am so glad now that I went ahead with surgery.I have been told it can take up to a year to fully recover, bones graft etc
Hope this was helpful
Best wishes
