In 1997 I had 2 disk chipped at in my spine. In 2004 I had a spinal fusion of L-4, and L-5. I did ok for the
1st year, then had pain again, down my legs, and thoughout my spine. 3 weeks ago I had another spinal fusion with complications. They went in to check the fusion of L-4 and 5 and found that I had so much scar tissue, so upon repairing, my spinal cord also had a tear which leaked fluid. They repaired all of this and also extened my fusion another level. I spent 1 week in the hospital, 48 hours flat on my back. I now have headaches, and horrible pain in both legs. I am on Neutotin, and percocet for pain. I am so tired. Problem is my job will only be held for 12 weeks. I work in Medical records filing charts now for 21 years. I am afraid I will lose my job this time. Does anyone think I can qualify for disability without a problem. I see the Doctor again in 6 weeks, and then will start therapy. Any suggestions will be helpful to me...what do I do?

The repeated injuries and surgeries may have caused Complex Regional Pain Complex or Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. These are complex conditions caused by repeated injuries and surgeries on the spinal cord. You need to see a good neurologist, orthopedist and also a pain clinic for a sure diagnosis, treatment and a pain control plan. If you do have this problem, then you have a lifetime problem and will be able to qualify for disability from Social Security. Avoid additional back surgery unless you are sure it will be of benefit. good luck

You had L4-L5 fusion and the pain you later experienced was most probably from L5-S1, the sciatic area which puts pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing pain and numbness down the leg. That's why they fused L5-S1. That's Neurontin you're on, which is an anti-inflammatory along with the Percocet for pain. You're tired because your body is using all your energy to heal. File for state disability from the date of three weeks ago. I'm surprised that you don't see the doctor for six weeks after surgery...are you prescribed physical therapy? If not, get it. You'll stiffen up like a dead mackeral is you aren't strengthening the surgical area. Whenever your spine has a fluid leak or you have an LP (lumbar puncture test), you are required to stay flat on your back for 48 hrs. It's the normal protocol. You can get temporary disability for the time you aren't working...and you say you'll lose your job after 12 wks (three months) after working there 21 yrs? I rather doubt it. Any chance the initial or secondary injury was work-related? They can't fire you with a work comp injury under LC 132.a. Make an appt w/your doctor and get the state disability form signed so you can have some income. If it's work comp, get an atty - FAST!
