Is it true that when you have an epidural, hospitals remove your some of your spinal fluid and sell it?

I heard it was very common in Mexico and that they sell your spinal fluid for a lot of money. My aunt scared me since I had an epidural when I had my son about 9 months ago. Is it true? And that they only do it to pregnant women since they are considered "healthy" and they only want good spinal fluids. Does this happen here too in the U.S. w/o your knowing? How can you tell if you have had spinal fluid taken out?
Wow, unless you have some hard evidence to back that up, I wouldn't believe one word. Spinal fluid is useless to anyone else, except the person it came from, so i don't see what selling it would do. that's a heck of a lot of effort for something that is completely useless.

I can tell you, because a friend of mine had to have some fluid drained as a result of a tumor, you can just tell. Your spine would grate with the sensation and you would get a massive headache, even a migraine. This is the other reason I fail to see how anyone could just take spinal fluid and sell it without anyone noticing, slightly impossible.
I know that in the US, spinal fluid is not sold for money.
To run tests, physicians only remove a 9-12 milliliters from adults (3-4 tubes at 3 ml/tube.)
In the lab where I work, we use most, if not all of it just to run the battery of tests. Any thing leftover (if any at all) is stored in case future tests are needed.
Once a certain amout of time has passed, we discard the leftover fluid to be sterilized and destroyed.

In epidurals, a small amount may be removed (to make room for the medication), however it would be discarded as well.

Physicians perform LPs (lumbar punctures) on lots of people for lots of reasons.
Removing too much fluid will cause severe headaches. Spinal fluid helps to cushion the brain.

I've never heard of the practice occurring in Mexico. Seems unlikely.

Its unlikely you would have an LP without your knowing it. It is an invasive procedure and your informed consent would be required. The needle leaves a visible hole where it enters the back and through into the spinal column.
It certainly does not happen in the U.S. I can't imagine why it would happen in Mexico as it isn't useful for anything.
