Can Stem Cell research fix spinal injuries?
If someone had a spinal injury and now the nerves in his arms causes him not to have strength in his hands, can the stem cell research fix this problem?
Answers:
It is possible it could help. Our body's cells come from stem cells. They are cells that can become any type of specific cell. Since nerves are the slowest to heal, stem cells could help by speeding the heeling process and reconecting the extremity to the nervous system.
It is very possible that some day stem cells could help with spinal research. one of the only doubts in my mind is that the cells need years to mature... So someone functioning as a 20 year old gets in an accident and tries to use stem cells, but these cells are 20 years behind the rest of the persons body...so they aren't going to catch up to the age level of that person. not that i don't want it to work, it will be a major feat!
