My husband had a spinal fusion operation and it has gone worse?

he had the operation in July last year and the operation that he had was fine, but the pain he is now getting is ten times worse than before the op.the pain he is now getting is at the bottom of his back, and he had to go to the hospital today, they haave told him that the nerves at the bottom of his back have been trapped and that tissue has grown around them and there is nothing that can be done. When he explained that the pain is a lot worse than before and that he is in bed every night between 6 &7 every night they said that they will send him to pain management but that is as much as can be done, but i dont see how that can help as he has been on morhine for the past 3years, is there anything that we can do he will try anything as he is so desperate.

I am so sorry for you husband and his pain. My surgeon wanted to do a fusion on me about 2 year's ago (age 31) but after much research, I refused. My MRI shows significant scar tissue from a previous surgery and surgery to remove that will only result in more developing. So, my options have been pretty limited. I finally found information about a Spinal Cord Stimulator and found a surgeon who was willing to give it a try (3 others declined for various reasons including the fact that I am diabetic, they didn't believe in their effectiveness and I have not had children yet). I had a very successful trial so the device was permanentmy implanted and it helped relieve my pain significantly. Unfortunately I had reaction to it and after 6 weeks I needed emergency surgery to remove it. The rejection my body experienced it NOT common and my surgeon has seen nothing like it before so please don't let that scare you. With all your husband has been through, he may want to look into trying this as well. Best wishes.
go to another doctor.please.

to notice steady Improvement,The thing you are going thru is not Isolated case there are A whole lot of People with same.
Morphine is a good or bad as it gets.

If it's his lower back that was operated on it was probably the L5-S1, sound familiar? This is the area that feeds the nerves to the legs. So, part of his symptoms would be numbness in the legs, pain, aching legs, weakness in the legs besides his back pain.

Pain management ASAP. He needs to be on an non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug to keep down inflammation. Muscle relaxers, pain medication and possibly sleep medication and even anti depressants to cope with the effects of what he can, can't do and the frustration of his situation.

I have back problems my self. The discs in my back are collapsing and I'm not old, it's a work related injury. The best thing that helped me was pain management and a doctor who really knew what he was doing.

He Rx water therapy for me. That's where a therapist gives you exercises in a heated pool about 90 degrees F. After about three weeks of this, he should feel better. He won't ever get over it.

BTW, they may suggest doing a steroidal injection into his spine. Don't! I did that once and decided never to do it again.
I've dealt with chronic back and leg pain since 1998. I was originally operated on for a herniated disc at L4-L5. For two years after the surgery my left leg kept "going to sleep" on me. In 2000, a Chicago dr. showed me where one of the screws was in my nerve. He removed the hardware but, the damage is done. I've been through many various procedures; RACZ, epidurals, PT, pain meds. The morphine made me sick, oxycodone made me zombie like and now I'm taking Lyrica and Norco. I had the trial for the spinal cord stimulator last week and it was just removed Monday. Your husband should try different pain mgmt. clinics. I've learned over the years that they all have different types of treatments and maybe one will work for him. I'm still trying. Best of luck!!
