What hobbies can I suggest for my 19yo daughter recovering from a spinal cord injury (limited use of hands)?

She has just returned from Inpatient and Outpatient care after being in the hospital for 3 months. Boredom and depression seem to be setting in because she is not able to drive or do the things that she once did before this accident. She was involved in an auto accident on May 1st, 2007 and broke her neck in 2 different places (C6 & C7 "incomplete" meaning she may recover some of her abilities), received multiple broken ribs, punctured/ripped lung which required surgery & ventalator, injured her spinal cord which caused complete paralysis in the beginning and is now unable to work, finish college or drive. She is walking now (very unsteady gait), and would like to develop more use of her hands. She needs to focus on recovering some of her manual dexterity and fine motor skills and needs to develop a hobby that will allow her to have fun and generate interest while working on these things. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

This is one of my passions and hopefully your daughter will find it interesting. She could eventually end up making money with this idea, kind of brings out the creative juices.

The best of luck to you and your family and hopefully a speedy recovery:~)
first, she can go to school, work, or drive. I am in a wheelchair and do all. Get her into a wheelchair sport. She can do anything she wants to do. If she doesn't want to do something then don't force her.
Try volleyball!! Volleyball stays within a limit that is not to tiring but ust enough movement. It will definitely recover her arm and hand strength... but I would start off easy and build her back and neck strength.
Good Luck finding an activity if this isn't the right sport you are looking for...:)
A magnadoodle is a fun place to start 'cause she can draw without having to have much hand strength. I would get a laptop so she can get back to typing and surfing the web!. Being as young as she is, her brain is still plastic enough for change. She will be wiring new connections, just like anybody does when they learn new skills. Mixing cookie dough or cake batter that you prepare will give her shoulders some work. Let her handle lots of textures: silky fabrics, marbles, stuff that will integrate her knowledge of the world to her limbs which have been incomunicato.

There are kids and young adults who have had to have half their brain removed because of epilepsy. They have done amazingly well rewiring their brains, even picking up their previous skill playing the violin.

Hit Michaels and pick out crafts or stuff that looks like fun. It doesn't matter what you do with it afterward or how well she can accomplish the task...its the process that is important. Good luck.
is something like word circle puzzle books an idea --perhaps -listening to music --possibly a portable dvd player? and maybe something like a keyboard -my heart goes out to your family - im sorry this terrible thing has happened -
So sorry to hear this and I hope she gets better soon. Have her draw and color for that is great for her motor skills. Also what is good to is buy her those bead kits where she can make earrings, necklaces and or bracelets, also very good for her hands and fingers. Teach her to knit too, also this sounds crazy but have her fold towels, hand towels etc it works. Good luck to you and yours and hope this helped :)
wheelchair basketball
With limited used of hands, you can consider to develop her in painting. Painting is something very enriching. You are able to bring nature onto paper. However, this required patience. But on the other hand, it also develope patience. For a start, you can consider simple painting like sketching. This does not requires to have a lot of gadgets (like water color, brushes etc..). It only requries some pencils. There again, painting/sketching is a form of art that requires interest. You may have to check with her and see if she likes. You may also like to refer to the list of hobbies here and see is there anything that suits her character. Regards.
