How Long were you out of work after a lumbar spinal fusion?

I am 26. I had a lumbar fusion at the L4-5 lvl 03 April 2006. My surgeon said that I would feel like normal after three months. Here I am at 4 months and I am still in some pain. My back is killing me. It is hard for me to go shopping or walking downtown without being in a lot of pain that night. I recently seperated from th Air Force and I am looking for a job. I have turned down jobs because i could not physically perform the duties. How long was anyone else out of work, and how long did it take for the pain to go away? I was sure it would be sooner than this because I am young and I was in very good health and in shape before the surgery. Help?

After the first one I was able to go back to work after about 4 to 5 months. But, after the 2 nd and 3rd ones I had to go on disability and will never be able to go back to work. I am some better now, but some days are better than others. Usually if I go shopping I have to use an electric wheel chair or be in pain most of the rest of the week. I had worked in the medical field for over 30 years. I guess all the heavy lifting and everything just took a toll on my back. I still have pain, and it has been about a year and 9 months ago.Your back will never be as good as it was before. You may have to go back to school and get training in another field.
I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news. maybe yours will turn out better than mine did. Good luck and God Bless

OUCCHHH!
I've never had back surgery, but my son who's 40 did, and he was out of work only 2 months. From what I have read about this, it varies A lot between individuals. So don't let others tell you how You're supposed to feel. Only You can feel YOUR pain.
THIS IS STRANGE.!
I had a disectomy L4-5 in June 2005.
Before I got that surgery. In April 2005 had a Q-bypass because of my family history. I felt great after both surgeries.
I even went skiing. I am retired 66 and remodeling my kitchen that is what set my back off in the first place. Here several months ago I returned to the remodel but moving a sheet of wallboard I hurt my back again. I know that pain a dull, aching, exhausting, sore pain. Alieve works for me but I know it is just a cover-up. I am procrastinating seeing the Dr. Because I've got to return to Sacramento to stay with family.
We both must return to find out how and why we are having pain.
I've had the spinal fusion done on me on Feb.2, 2006. I was in the hospital for only 3 days total. Then I was off from work for 5 weeks. Now I am back to work and still in a lot of pain. Have been on pain pills now for 2 years. I see no end of that real soon. I guess as long as I can still walk I will work no matter what the outcome. There is always something out there that I can do. I am 47 years old and and weigh 150 lbs. Male.
