What happens when your brain stem is detached from your spinal cord?

PLEASE HELP, SOMEONE I KNOW WAS IN AN ACCIDENT YESTERDAY AND THIS HAPPENED
Usually you suffer from some sort of paralysis.
paralized from the neck down
usually death,but total paralysis breathing only with assistance
Quadriplegic, depending on the location, maybe partial,
The person will loose function below the break, if close to the head, total paralysis
