Is surgery a good solution for a compressed spinal cord?

It may be your only solution.
My dad's spinal cord is compressed, and he was just diagnosed about 6 months ago. So far he has just gotten a few shots to help with the pain, however, i think that he will have surgery eventually. Hope this helps!
If you have a true HNP (Herniated Nucleo palposis.) also known as a collapsed disc, then this is the fastest way to relieve symptoms of pain and numbness. there are many things that can comprees the spinal cord, from extra calcification in bones to tumors. If it is only a buldging disc not yet herniated then i would avoid surgery. the body will heal itself. the problem is the commitment to be good to your neck and spine for 6 to 8 weeks. good luck
If it is the SPINAL CORD, then emergecy surgrey before the spinal cord is damaged, the pressure must be released otherwise paralysis (permanant) is the out come.
Usually, injuries to the spinal cord do not result in a cut through the cord; instead, they crush the thin, fibrous extensions of nerve cells that are surrounded by the vertebrae. Direct damage can also occur if the spinal cord is pulled, pressed sideways, or compressed. This may occur if the head, neck, or back are twisted abnormally during an accident or injury.Bleeding, fluid accumulation, and swelling can occur inside the spinal cord or outside the spinal cord (but within the spinal canal). The accumulation of blood or fluid can compress the spinal cord and damage it. Today, patients have a wide variety of medications to choose from These medications include : Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), COX-2 Inhibitors, Acetaminophen, Opioids, Muscle Relaxants and Spinal Injections. Facet Joint Injection. When the pain originates from the facet joints (located in each side of the vertebrae), a specific type of injection called a facet joint injection may reduce inflammation and provide back pain relief. Epidural Steroid Injection (ESI): during an ESI, medications are injected into the “epidural space”. The epidural space is the area between the spinal sac and spinal canal, which runs the length of the canal. Spinal Surgery. Fortunately, most problems are treated successfully without surgery. However, there are certain conditions that are routinely treated surgically. Discectomy. The most common cause of low back pain is a herniated disc. The surgical option for this condition is called a discectomy. A discectomy involves removing the soft gel-like material in the disc, returning the disc to a more normal shape, and relieving pressure on the nerve to solve the problem. Laminectomy and Laminotomy. Spinal stenosis is another common cause of back pain, particularly in older people. The surgical option for this condition is called a laminectomy (removal of the entire lamina) or a laminotomy (partial removal of the lamina). The lamina is the small bony plate located in the back of each vertebra. Partial or total removal of this plate gives the surgeon access to the intervertebral disc. These surgical procedures are also used to treat spondylolisthesis and to relieve pressure on the spinal canal caused by spinal tumors.
Chiropractic for back pain is a branch of the healing arts based on the understanding that good health depends, in part, upon a normally functioning nervous system. The spinal column is a key structure in the nervous system as it contains the spinal cord and nerve roots that branch out into the entire body. In back pain Chiropractors do not prescribe drugs or perform surgery. Chiropractic treatment involves adjusting the spine to correct vertebral misalignment and imbalance. Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used alternative or ‘complimentary medical’ procedures in the world for back pain.
Hope this helps
