I have assisted in many spinal taps. It is sometimes difficult to access the tiny space that contains the fluid needed for testing. Arthritis, adhesions from prior injury or surgery, positioning of the patient, patient tolerance, or poor technique all can come into the factor. If you ever have to get another one, use the rule of thumb that twice is enough - you have the right to ask for someone else to do the procedure if you lose faith in the person who is not "getting it."

That should never have happened to you. I had one done and was told it was going to be painful so I was geared up for that but it wasn't painful. I had made up my mind ahead of time to focus on something else and it was over before I knew it. So, no you shouldn't have to go through what you did.
This was something that should of never happened. Sometimes they need to position you different so that your spine is stretched so that they can get in between the vertebrae. When I had mine done I had to actually be curled into a ball to open my verterae up. I would being going some where else to have the second one done.
I had one when I was younger and it was really painful and it took 2 tries. It is not an easy procedure to do. You could have had a new doctor who has not done many before. I recently had surgery and I had a new anaesthesia doctor and the guy could not get an IV in me to save his life and he completely hacked up my throat when he intubated me. I now request to have an experienced cotor do the procedure. I am sorry for what happened to you. That sucks. Next time will be better!
Wow. I'm so sorry your experience was that difficult. My doctor stuck me once, got the fluid pressure, then withdrew fluid to put my spinal fluid pressure in the normal range. Was up and walking around 30 minutes later and left the hospital within the hour. Again, sorry it was so difficult. Hope you're feeling better.
