Why does a spinal epidural sometimes cause itching in patients?

Answers:
Most epidural solutions contain a narcotic, usually fentanyl, which can cause some itching when it interacts with certain receptors within the spinal column. It almost never happens when narcotics are given by mouth or intramuscular/intravenous injection.
It is a side effect of morphine derivatives, which is used in the epidural. I had it after my csection, but it is tolerable.
if certain nerves are hit with the injection and or the medicine it can trigger an itch in your body. Any time something goes into your spine it can cause secondary problems. Place an ice pack on the area of injection to calm down any responses. Benedryl Is very good at relieving itching symptoms. If you feel this is too much for you contact your medical doctor and ask for medication to stop the itch.
If opiods are added to spinals or epidurals, itching is a common side effect. It is not an allergic reaction but rather a direct effect on the spinal cord. It can be reversed with Narcan.
