According to textbook recommendation for differential diagnosis for MS should including;small cerebral infarction,syringomyelia,amyot... lateral sclerosis,syphilis,pernicious anemia,arthritis of cervical spine,ruptured disk,basilar impression,SLE,hereditary ataxias,cns tumors,abscesses,vascular malformation.All these if clinical symptoms and MRI or cat-scan can't get answer,CSF should be done.From CSF analysis if found a lot of wbc(pus cell) or high protein or low glucose will point to infections,if not clear then go to culture,smear to identify the bact.or perform serology test(antigent anti-body),Also found cancer cell.From each illness mention above how they show up in CSF need a lot to say,you better looking for other reference.You seems concern about infection disease;In your case such chronic condition,no need to look in for acute infection such meningitis or encephalitis(virus),you need looking for chronic infection such as syphilis(Nero type has many similar symptoms of ms),TB,small brain abscess,Lyme disease.If those disease pick and treatment sure symptoms will gets better.
