I have spinal stenosis and I'm considering a rowing machine to tone up my abs, hips, thighs, etc. .?

If a rowing machine is not the "thing" for me, can you recommend a better choice? I have numbness in my feet at times and pain in buttocks. Physical therapy is not helping that much.

Answers:
It depends on the mechanism of your stenosis. If your stenosis is being caused by boney build up...more of a "degenerative" type of condition, rowing will probably be fine because most people with stenosis tolerate a seated "flexed" posture very well. They also usually tolerate cycling very well. Your are right, physical therapy cannot cure this condition...only show you what to do to "manage" the condition.

If your stenosis is being caused a bulging or herniated disc (meaning it is the disc that is actually causing the narrowing of the central canal or neuroforamen...and not a boney substance), then rowing and cycling might actually make you feel worse...as these people USUALLY feel WORSE in the flexed position. I'd opt for swimming or walking in these cases. It is possible that physical therapy might help this condition...but you've really got to find someone who specializes in the management of this type of disorder.

Good luck...and good for you for wanting to keep up your level of fitness. My dad has a degenerative stenosis...he cannot walk more than 100 feet, but can ride his bike for 20miles without any pain whatsoever.
it is important to be sure of the amount of stenosis you have. also if you are having incontinence of urine or muscle weakness, you are likely to need surgery. if the MRI shows a stenosis of less than 10 to 12 mm better to get operated.
