I had spinal fusion of the L5/S1 veterbrae, what did you take for the burning?

My foot burns and the doctor prescribed me Gabapentin which is a generic for Neurontin. I've been on it a week and have had no results. I also can't sleep because of the pain and was prescribed a generic for Ambien which also does not work. I refuse to be in pain any longer. Can someone tell me what they took so I can tell the Doctor to prescribe it to me? I asked about a spinal block but they said it is to early as it has been a little over a month since surgery, but at this point I don't care as I cry everyday from the terrible pain. Any help is appreciated!

Answers:
i had the same surgery for the exact same thing (l5-s1) they too gave me gabapentin. it took about 3 weeks of taking it to start to work.

I know how you feel it is unbearable mine hurt so bad my teeth would chatter uncontrolably like i was cold but it was from the pain.

they refused to do a nerve block for me too. sorry i dont have fix for you just wanted to let you know you werent the only one who has had this. seems like you are experiencing the samething i did 8 months ago.

I will say if gets better hang in there
Generics are NO different that the other prescription
only cheaper for the insurance and co- pays

give it time- one week is not sufficient time to see if a med works
My husband has the same problem...although he has not gone thru the spinal fusion as of yet, he has had two surgeries on the discs. Gabapentin does not work for him either (nor does darvon, ultram or naproxin)...he is now on Lyrica and has had very favorable results so far! Also, have you tried massage therapy? It will help you with any adhesions you may have and relax those muscles around your spine that have been traumatized.a good professional massage therapist will know how to work on you without hurting you. I can appreciate the amount of pain you are in.I see my husband live with it every day. Good luck to you.
first...it will take 9 to 12 months for your body to heal after the type surgery you had.

ice pack (curshed ice best) applied to the L5-S1 area, 20 minutes on--20 minutes off...over and over...you should get noticeable relief after the 4th application.

do not engage in activity that will "undo" the surgery...lifting more than 20lbs...sports...use proper biomechanics with all movement (your surgeon can tell you)...biofeedback training from a qualified pain clinic can help...physical therapy can teach you proper stretching techniques.

There are medications that will kill the pain, but you may feel so good you reinjure your back
