Im about to have posterior spinal fusion can someone tell me what it was like after surgery?

Answers:
I haven't had spinal fusion but I have had a major discectomy and nerve realignment in the L5/S1 joint. The recovery is more or less the same.

Surgery is not the final step in the recovery. Far from it. Regular light to moderate exercise with an emphasis on stretching is really important.

You should get up and get mobile as soon as possible after the surgery. Your doctors of course will guide you in this but the key is to regain range of motion so that your muscles will unclench.

Start with slow walking. Move up gradually to longer walks. I love swimming so when I was recovering from my back surgery I went swimming as soon as the incision had healed up. Swimming or aquacize is a great way to get much needed exercise without stressing your muscular-skeletal system.

Stretching is really important but do it when you are warm, either after light exercise or in a hot bath or sauna is also good. Ask a physiotherapist or professional exercise consultant what stretches to do.

Good luck.
