Having spinal fusion on lower back.?

The last 3 disks in my lower back are messed up. The first 2 all the way on the bottom are gone.. Degenerated. Doc says they will leave them alone. He said they were dead!! The 3rd one up is herneated and they will fuse that one. Does this all sound right? Please help! Has anyone had the same experence? How could your disks be dead? The pain that i have in my back is from the herneated disk, not the two bottom lumbar degenerated ones,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Will i have problems later?

Answers:
I had the spinal fusion on disks L-4 and L-5 around 10 years ago. It was rough but worth it. I have degenerative disc disease also. I am now having to consider doing it again on the next area up. My fusion is holding but the disc above is herniated. It is compressing the nerves. Please don't wait to long to decide about having the surgery because the damage can sometimes not be repaired. I have had a good 10 years without a lot of pain and I will probably have the surgery again, depending on other medical issues. Remember you have to take care of you and it will take time to heal. If i can help, let me know. Good luck
what i would do is see if there is a diagnosis name for the problem. then what i would do is go to this web site www.webmd.com it will help you answer all your questions. good luck with your surgery i hope all goes well.
your discs are living entities. They need nutrients and when they do not get those nutrients, they die or dissicate.
If I were you I would exhaust all alternative healthcare methods before undergoing invasive treatment. Invasive may be the only answer, but try everything else first. For example: chiropractic, massage, PT, accupuncture, herbals, etc.
The disc itself will not give you pain. It does not have a nerve supply. It is the pressure upon nerves and tissues surrounding it that is giving you the pain.
hi,
hope you did not just go with one doctor and one opinion with a situation that is as severe as yours.without seeing mri and x-rays
i don't believe anyone answering your question can give you appropriate advice, but i will say that getting not just two or three but many opinions from experts in lumbar pain is essential. just remember once you have surgery, reversing that is not an option.
it is not like getting a bad haircut, you'll live with this decision for the rest of your days and being terribly limited in mobility.
so i strongly suggest to get on your computer and do a search for experts in bulging discs and "dead" discs and see what the
absolute authorities say in every field not just allopathic medicine
there may be an alternative that you haven't even heard of that might be right for you
good luck
OKAY this is the serious answer for the day..Have it done.I know two people one decided to do it..active painfree life dances swims shops! the other did not want to 'do the surgery thing' The pain is now so bad and crippling she begged the Docotrs to carry out a fusion..but it is too late.the discs have degraded.so in her future we see a chair with wheels and ever increasing amounts od Diazapan get it done xx good luck
Get a second opinion or even a third if necessary. Your back is nothing to mess around with.
