T8 spinal cord injury can I walk?
Answers:
That depends on the extent of the injury.
A complete T8 injury means complete paralysis of the lower extremities, since the lumbar segments (which are lower down) control hip, thigh, leg, and toe motor units.
You'll KNOW if you can walk when you can get up and walk... why are you asking on the internet? Go and try to take a walk.
My friend, you cannot ask this question on Helpde.com s. It may not even be fair question to ask a neurologist. You haven't described the precise nature of the injury and whether or not the cord is intact. You haven't mentioned how old the injury is. Your question is completely inappropriate.
If this is a serious question, please, speak to your doctor.
You could try with RGO's no promises, but it would be a start. even just to get you standing.
RGO's are metal braces that go almost to your chest, and are hard to get on and off. But these braces can lock at the hip and knees making you stand stiff as a board and all you need to do to walk is hold onto a walker and shift your weight, making the legs swing.
So with something like that , you would think it could be possible. Will you get up and run a marathon without any braces? Probably not.
I've seen a guy at L-4 that could walk and one at L-4 that couldn't. So like the lady above said, it depends on the type and extent of injury and lots of other things like that because even people with the exact same level of injury have different results.
But if you try the braces, even if all you end up doing is standing with help, it is a beginning, and weight bearing and stretching and standing is good for circulation and stuff too. I hear though that these braces require only that you shift your weight from side to side and the legs swing forward for you.
Good luck.
