Spinal fusion surgery...?
I am 17 years old, and having a spinal fusion done on the 19th of this month. I want to know if anyone who has had this surgery done has had any complications after the surgery. I would also appreciate if anybody would be willing to talk who has had this surgery (or if there are any doctors/surgeons reading this who would be willing to answer questions). My AIM screen name and email address are on my profile. Please let me know in an answer if you are going to contact me by email so I know to look for your email and wont delete it thinking it is spam.

What are you having the surgery done for?
My sister had scoliosis surgery done when she was 14, and I treat a lot of back pain patients who have neck & back fusions.
My husband also had neck fusion surgery after being in a car accident several years ago.
Every patient is different, and every procedure is different...
Just because you may have heard a scary story from someone who had a back surgery don't let it bother you ( I don't know if this is the case or not...)
You are young & are most likely going to recover very well... especially compared to someone who is 50 or 60 years old who had the same surgery-- older bodies just don't heal the same way!
If you have specific questions that have not been answered yet by your own doctor, you really need to ask him or her about the procedure, how you are going to recover, when you start walking around, how long your therapy will take etc.because your doctor knows what is going on in YOUR case with YOUR spine.

what surgery are you having? I had scoliosis surgery done years ago obviously with spinal fusion... with instrumentation... email me. i will send u an email now.
My dad had that done about 4 years ago,and it was a very painful thing to go through, but I don't know the extent of what they are doing to you,and he had to go through recycling his blood, and of course there was always the risk of infection, and also he had a hole in his spine, and they had to patch that after his surgery cause spinal fluid was leaking, and he had very bad headaches. He was in intensive care for about a week, but he did really good, and they have come so far these days with back surgery, and I think with you being so young you wil do alot better, and have a faster recovery. You will be in my prayers, and have faith.
i had 2 laminectomies in 2002 and had spinal fusion may26 of this year. it has just now starting not to hurt so bad .the pain is amost unbearable at first. just make sure you take ur meds. exactly when you're suppose to so u can keep on top of the pain (if it's at all possible) i hate that u have to have this done at your age i'm 35 and they said i was too young to be this screwed up.and i work in a really phys. job (im a stationary eng. and work in a chem. plant opening and closing valves all day -i dont think ill ever to go back-and im really scarred.also i had nurses in the hosp.(i had to stay 3 days thats the norm) that didnt have a clue what they were doing i hope u get some better.but the pain WILL get better- it will take 8-10 wks. to feel relief-and a full yr. to heal.when i went back to my surg. 2 wks ago he took x-rays to see if my "hardware" lookes good and u wouldnt believe what u will look like. it looks like someone went to lowes and just bolted it up w/screws and rods(the x ray was so clear i could even tell they were phillips head screws! do u trust ur surgeon? if u doubt at all DONT DO iT this could screw u up for life but, if you're like me u dont have much of a choice. but i feel a lot better and i know u will too
