Spinal fusion operation?
A friend is scheduled to have this operation soon and I wonder if in this day and age this is not just a cheap and barabric quick fix to help someone whose back problems have never been diagnosed. This problem has been going on as long as I have known this person. If after the operation it makes no difference is there something more effective?

Firstly this is NOT a cheap surgery. My husband had this about 2 years ago with Dr Wood in Atlanta hes one of the best in the world. They removed a bone from his hip and placed it in his neck for fusion. He was given a one stimulation collar and had to wear a neck brace, was not allowed to lift ANYTHING over 5lbs until he slowly worked his way up to 12 then no weight limit. After being out of work 18 months he was finally able to go back. It def has helped him in many ways but at the same time it has had its draw backs such as some stiffness and achyness at times. But he no long has numbness and swelling in his arms and legs overall I would def say this was well worth it as at the time his back was so bad his Dr told him should he ever fall or slip or get into a car accident it would leave him paralized or kill him.( This has been corrected)
My wife has got a spinal problem but the consul ant said operation was last resort,
also i had a serious back problem years ago and was told i would most probably not be able to work again,
but after spending along while of work feeling sorry for myself i was asked by Friend if i could do some driving for him ,
it was painful for awhile but then the pain disappeared and i have not any pain since,
so are the doctors all ways right or can they make mistakes like the rest of us
