I have had chronic spinal problems for past 3 years-3 operations and am potentially about to face spinal fusio

does it work? How bad is the post-op pain? Thanks

Answers:
I work in a hospital and I've seen the procedure done may times on patients. I can tell you that it does vary from person to person. The procedure I've seen most is the 360 degree fusion. The doctors make incisions in your back and abdomen. Recover is painful and can be slow. There are pain medicines that they will give you but still expect to have some pain. The degree of the pain depends on your pain tolerance. Most patients are very satisfied with their decision to go through with it and say that the pain isn't any worse than what they were experiencing pre-op.

I'll advise you to look at all your options and do some research on the surgery. Talk to some of the patients who have had it done and see how it's changed them.
I have 3 friends who have had a spinal fusion operation and 2 say it was a success and they are satisfied. The third still has some mild to moderate back pain and is considering having the surgery again. They all had different surgeons.
The relief achieved from the operation is about 50/50. I know people and relatives that have had experiences that range from super to no relief to more pain.
One of the common factors that I see in the group that claims relief from symptoms is that they also make lifestyle changes before they have the surgery. This group seems to have coupled weight loss and light exercise with the surgery to have the best results.
One person in particular was a larger framed person that lost twenty five pounds before the surgery. After the surgery, this person lost twenty-five more pounds and began walking. They are still exercising to date and enjoying a pain free existence.
As for post op pain, it varies from person to person. The people I know have had pain to some extent that lasts from the surgery to two or three days after the surgery before it begins to subside.
As with any surgery, it really depends on what other diagnoses and complications you may have. Most surgeries are successful, however, because a doctor most likley will not recommend this type of treatment if he/she believes it will not be successful.

Post-op pain also depends on you and your tolerance for pain. Your MD will discuss the treatment options, post op care and pain management with you prior to the surgery.
