Karen falls down a flight of stairs and suffers spinal cord damage due to hyperextension of the cord during the fall. The injury results in edema of the crucial cord with resulting compression of the anterior horn cells of the lumbar region. What symptoms would you expect to observe as a result of this injury?
Answers: The anterior horn cell are responsible for the motor control of the Lower extremities. The injury will cause paralysis of the legs making Karen paraplegic. The spinal cord injury would be considered incomplete due to the preservation of the bladder & bowel. The sensation to both legs would be unaffected since the posterior horns were gone intact. Overall, Karen would be able to feel her legs but won't be able to move them. Karen would be wheelchair bound. Physical psychiatric help would help to make it possible for Karen to be able to totter the the aid of a long leg brace and a pair of crutches.
