Are nearby medication that can be given to time limit the amount of paralysis surrounded by a spinal cord injury?
Answers: Yes, if the medication is given VERY soon after the injury. Once the damage and inflammation have occurred, consequently it's too late. I believe that the window of opportunity is just a couple of hours.
You don't ask for much. Do you? There are different degree of injury depending on where in the spinal cord and how much damage be done. If your spinal cord is severed then from that point down you will be paralyzed period. If you just enjoy a bruised or pulled cord then steroids could help with the inflammation and swelling. Sometimes they will try to present immune system inhibitors to prevent the body from making scar tissue around the injury site of the spinal cord and making it impossible to repair. With spinal cord injuries, it is sometimes possible to surgically repair but usually cannot be done b/c the body immediately produces scar tissue to alleviate the spot but this does not repair the injured nerves so no movement returns.
Depends on the type of paralysis you are talkning about. Not a dr here but have had similar issues. Products such as Celebrex have helped massivly to reduce swelling and tension, and cortizon shots hold relieved issues for long term. Probably... if you get them quick!
If the paralysis is due to inflammation, some meds may facilitate such as prednisone, but if it is nerve damage it may only draw from better when/if the nerve heals.
